The Real Speaking Contest You are Already In

How are you doing?

Yes, I’ve been a bit quiet lately. That’s because I’ve been knee-deep in rewriting a few of my public speaking books. It’s fascinating how your perspective shifts with time. (Note to self: Past You was ambitious. Present You is just better at editing.)

Now, here’s something I have to share.

Two of my coaching clients made it to the finals of an impromptu speech contest.

Now, if you’ve ever tried impromptu speaking, you know—it’s tough.
(It’s tougher than coming up with a good reason for forgetting your wife's birthday.)

They didn’t win the finals.
But you know what? I couldn’t be prouder.

They crossed multiple rounds. They stood tall on district stages.
And more importantly—they had a process.

A way to handle uncertainty. A method to tame the chaos of spontaneous speaking. That, my friend, is worth more than a trophy. And I'm glad that they can use that now and strengthen it further.

Sure, winning feels great.

It boosts confidence, brings recognition, and gives your dopamine levels a party.

But here’s the thing:

The real win is in building a process that helps you speak like a champion, not just in contests, but in everyday conversations as well.

So here’s my recommendation to you:

Don’t just chase outcomes.

Build a process that makes you better—speech by speech, day by day.

Because contests come and go.

But your real audience? Your team, your clients, your family members (your spouse can easily qualify as the chief judge!), your everyday interactions?

They’re the real judges.

And they’ll know when they’re hearing a champion.

To wrap up, please join me in giving a virtual high-five to our two amazing community members who are champions at heart and deed!

As always, thanks for your attention. Keep smiling, keep having fun, and stay awesome!

Hi Reader Ever heard of the law that quietly shapes the lives of the most respected, fulfilled, and wealthy people? It’s not hustle. It’s not networking. It’s not even raw talent. It’s value. (That's the subject line if you missed it. No open loops today!). There’s a gem from The Go-Giver (a book that I highly recommend. It's wonderfully written as a modern day parable) that reassured how I think about work and life: "Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you...

Hi Reader You’ve seen this, right? A speaker gets up — in a meeting room or on Zoom — and just starts. (I saw someone doing this and couldn't resist highlighting the problem and some simple ways to fix it. So you know where the inspiration for this newsletter came from!) No “hello,” no warm-up — just: “Alright, when you’re giving feedback, the first thing you need to do is…” Meanwhile, the audience is still shifting in their seats, wrapping up an email, or trying to figure out if this is...
